From the mind all things flow. A man can control his emotions by controlling
his mind. He can control his behaviors by controlling his mind. This is the essence of thinking. When we control our minds, we control our thinking. We are wise not to let our emotions control our mind or our behaviors. Emotions surely will influence your physiology, but never let them control your results. If the man’s mind has been trained to find opportunity in every situation, he can then see what most people perceive as negative as really a new opportunity. It’s not always easy, but it is doable. The more deliberately we train ourselves to be opportunity seekers, the easier it becomes in difficult situations. What we’re talking about here is being flexible in our thoughts. Every situation in life provides a space for us to activate our creative nature. The man who gets fired from his job has two choices. One is to be devastated in his thinking. The other is to reframe the situation as an opportunity to move into a career he prefers that is more beneficial to his future growth and happiness. All too often people will stay in a job, a relationship, or other situation despite their continued misery because they are wired to find the path of least resistance. Humans are notorious for turning a blind eye to what is glaring them in the face and it often takes a devastating experience to jolt them into a new reality. We are notorious for settling for what “is” despite knowing that what “is” is completely wrong or unhealthy for us. A new situation, regardless of how it comes about, is always an opportunity to enhance our lives but it takes a keen mind to think in this way. It requires subjugating our instinct, our emotions, and all negative thinking. There are times when people can get very emotional, which often leads to fear dominating their thinking. Research shows that fear is generated from the amygdala, which is in the emotion center of the brain, and when fear activates, it can shut down operations in the prefrontal cortex where logical thinking occurs. But it is logic that talks us out of our pessimism, so we must learn the skills needed to reduce our fear so our thinking brain can come back on-line again.
